Reader privacy

Applies to Free High Quality Reader 1.0.0. Effective September 20, 2026.

Article processing happens in your browser. We do not receive your articles, reading history, or appearance settings.

What the extension processes

When you choose Read this page, the extension reads the main document of the selected webpage. It extracts article text, headings, supported formatting, title, author information, and the original address. Images, embedded media, scripts, forms, and page styles are left out. It does not fetch the article again or load its remote resources.

Local and temporary storage

The first-use acknowledgement and appearance preferences are stored locally. Up to three extracted articles are held in the browser's temporary extension session storage so their reading tabs can reload. Each article can be reopened for up to one hour, unless discarded sooner or the browser restarts. Use Discard article to remove its temporary copy. An already rendered page may remain visible until you discard or close it.

HTML and text downloads include the article title, author information, and source address. Those files remain wherever you save them; discarding the temporary article does not delete downloads. Your operating system or backup and sync services may separately handle downloaded files under your own settings.

Permissions

activeTab gives temporary access to the webpage after you invoke the extension. scripting runs the bundled article extractor on that selected page. storage holds the acknowledgement, preferences, and temporary article copies described above. The extension has no permanent access to all websites.

Links and network activity

The extension makes no article uploads or automatic network requests. Opening an article link, the original page, a help page, the optional review page, or the donation page contacts that destination through your browser. These are actions you choose. Links in the reader use no-referrer protection.

Data use

There are no analytics, advertising identifiers, paid tiers, or data sales. Browser API data is used only to provide the reading functions described here, consistent with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy and its Limited Use requirements. It is not used for advertising, lending, or credit decisions.

Support

Contact tokens@betterextensions.org. Your email provider and the recipient process what you send so we can respond. Please leave private articles and account details out of support requests. Material policy changes will be included with an extension update.
