Help for Site Blocker

A little guidance.

Get set up, make your list work for you, and find answers to common questions. This is our public self-service support guide for version 1.0.0.

Getting started

How do I install Site Blocker?
  1. Download version 1.0.0 and extract the ZIP to a folder you’ll keep.
  2. Type chrome://extensions or brave://extensions into the browser’s address bar.
  3. Enable Developer mode, select Load unpacked, and choose the extracted folder containing manifest.json.
  4. Pin Site Blocker from the extensions menu, open its green shield, read the notice, and choose Agree and start.

The Chrome Web Store listing has not been published yet. Downloading the ZIP alone does not install it; follow the steps above. Keep the extracted folder in place.

Which browsers are supported?

Site Blocker is built for desktop Chrome 120 or newer and compatible versions of Brave. It uses Manifest V3. It is not a mobile app and does not block websites in other applications.

Chrome, Brave, and separate browser profiles each have their own installation and list.

The folder won’t load. What should I check?

Extract the ZIP before loading it. Select the folder with manifest.json directly inside, rather than the ZIP itself or a parent folder. Make sure Developer mode is on and your browser is up to date.

A work- or school-managed browser may restrict unpacked extensions. Site Blocker cannot override those restrictions.

How do I update or uninstall it?

For this local installation, updates are manual. Export your list as a backup, download the newer release, and replace the files in the same extension folder. Then open the extensions page and choose Reload for Site Blocker.

To uninstall, choose Remove for Site Blocker on the browser’s extensions page. Removing the extension removes its local settings and rules. Files you exported or downloaded remain wherever you saved them.

Working with your list

How do I block or unblock a website?

Open the green shield while visiting an HTTP or HTTPS website and select Block site. You can also type a domain or paste a URL into Add a website.

To unblock a site, choose Remove beside its domain. Use Manage list for the larger page and search field. After removing a block, navigate to that website again; the existing blocked page does not reopen it automatically.

Can I pause everything without deleting my list?

Yes. Use the switch at the top of the popup or management page. Pausing preserves all your domains. Turn the switch back on to resume blocking, including matching open tabs.

After pausing, navigate to a previously blocked website again to open it.

What exactly does a domain entry block?

Adding example.com blocks that domain and its subdomains, including www.example.com and news.example.com, on every path and port.

Adding only news.example.com blocks that subdomain and its children, leaving the parent domain unaffected. Pasted URLs are reduced to their domain; an entry cannot target only one page or URL path.

Site Blocker redirects matching page and frame navigations. It is not an image, script, or ad filter. IPv6 addresses and path-specific rules are not supported.

How do I move a list between Chrome and Brave?

Open Manage list in the source browser, then choose Export. In the other browser, open Site Blocker’s management page and choose Import to select the file.

Imports merge with the current list and remove duplicates. They do not change your pause setting. Lists do not sync automatically across browsers or profiles.

Which import files are supported?

Use a UTF-8 .txt file with one domain per line, or a .json file containing an array of domains, such as ["example.com", "example.net"]. JSON with a sites array is also supported. Text lists can use commas or semicolons as separators.

The file limit is 1 MB, and the resulting list can contain up to 4,000 domains. If an entry is invalid or the result exceeds the limit, the existing list is left unchanged. Exported files contain your domain list, so share them only if you intend to disclose those domains.

Blocking & privacy

A site isn’t being blocked. What should I check?
  1. Confirm Site Blocker is enabled on the browser’s extensions page and that its blocking switch is on.
  2. Open the green shield and complete the first-use notice if needed.
  3. Check that the website’s domain or a parent domain appears in your list.
  4. Check the extension’s site-access setting. It needs access to the websites you want to block.
  5. If you’re using a private window, enable the separate private-window permission described below.

Browser-internal pages and protected pages, including the Chrome Web Store, are outside Site Blocker’s control. This extension blocks within the browser where it is installed.

Does it work in Incognito or private windows?

Private-window access is off by default. Open chrome://extensions or brave://extensions, choose Details for Site Blocker, and enable the browser’s Allow in Incognito or equivalent private-window option.

The same block list is used for the installation. Private-window behavior depends on browser permission and is not enabled simply by installing the extension.

Why does the browser show a broad website-access warning?

Site Blocker needs HTTP/HTTPS access so you can select any website and apply your blocks to matching open tabs. It also uses local storage to remember your list and the browser’s declarative network rules to redirect selected websites.

The extension does not read page content, passwords, cookies, or keystrokes. It processes tab URLs locally, does not save a browsing-history log, and sends no data to us. Read the extension privacy policy for the full explanation.

Does Site Blocker have a password lock or a schedule?

No. Site Blocker is a voluntary focus tool. Anyone who controls the browser can pause it, change its list, or uninstall it. It has no password lock, scheduling, or device-wide enforcement.

How do I delete my extension data?

Remove individual domains from your list or uninstall Site Blocker to remove its local settings and rules. Any exported lists are ordinary files you saved; delete those files separately if you no longer want them.

There is no Site Blocker account or server-side extension-data record to delete. Website hosting is separate and described in the website privacy policy.
